My iPhone plunged into the toilet bowl! (not by itself, though)

Kids are a blessing. They spark such chaos joy around the house… They grow so fast, I  have to remind myself that I should kiss and cuddle them twice as often – even when they drive me nuts – while they still enjoy it.

But when a preschooler, slippery hands and a toilet bowl are involved, you do not so much want to press their little angel heads against your heart anymore.

That’s what happened a few weeks ago. One of my cherubs accidentally dropped my iPhone into the toilet bowl. I don’t exactly let my kids play freely with my smartphone, it’s more like they grab it whenever they have a chance to. Dang Siri!

'You dropped my phone in the WHAAAAAAT?'
‘You dropped my phone in the WHAAAAAAT?’

To say I was devastated is an understatement. I was craaaaayy-zaaaay! My phone started to act erratic, opening and closing apps frantically, making random calls, accepting unwanted friend requests from people I didn’t know of on Facebook… So I shut it down and searched hysterically for advice on the Internet.

There weren’t many options : I could spend $79 to have a professional de-oxidize the phone, without any guarantee that it would work. Or, I could store the phone in a Ziploc bag full of uncooked rice. Which, of course, I did.

Obviously, every tiny slot was invaded by rice and I had to painstakingly take every single particle off with a needle… Then I knew better and I stuffed the slots with tiny bits of compress pads, and back into the rice. 24 hours later the iPhone was still acting crazy. Google told me (yeah, I’m buddies with Google) that desiccators – you know, the kind that you find in new purses or shoes from the store – would be even more absorbent than rice, so I figured out silica-based cat litter would do the trick.

The cellphone had a quite a long stay in cat litter… (72 hours, I’d say?) and I don’t know if it’s the rice, the cat litter, or the fact that the water finally dried… But a few days later, my iPhone miraculously recovered. Like, I could make calls and hear people talking. And they heard me too. I know, who uses their phone to make calls anymore, right? But anyway.

I guess I had to share. It may or may not work for you, but I hope it can be of some help. Prayers might help too. And, please? Don’t be a terrible mom like me and get mad at your little one if they drop your can’t-live-without phone in the water.

I felt so so bad yelling at my 5-year-old sweetheart that he’d ruined my life phone.
